Veselka’s founder, Wolodymyr Darmochwal, was an agronomist and the director of a huge agricultural cooperative in Ukraine. In 1944, he and his family members – wife Olha, son Mykola and daughter Marta – fled the war and arrived in America by way of a refugee camp in Germany. He labored a selection of careers to assist his family, and he was energetic in the Ukrainian neighborhood of Manhattan’s East Village. In 1954, he was instrumental in assisting the Ukrainian Youth Business (PLAST) get its headquarters on 2nd Avenue. To assistance the venture, he obtained a candy store and newsstand that had operated out of the corner of the constructing. With poetic flair, an entrepreneurial spirit and a wonderful offer of optimism, he named the retailer “Veselka” – the Ukrainian phrase for “Rainbow”.
